New Mexico Treasure

by Joe Southern

Does anyone want to plan a trip to search for this cave, accidentally found and lost by a Santa Fe trader and worked by the Comanche Indians containing rough diamonds, is located in the Pedernal Mountains N of Pedernal Peak to the NW of Encino?

Any more history on this?

Seems the area is well within what would be have been "Comancheria" but two things don't add up, the Comanche were not known for their mining skills or rock hounding and typically raw diamonds are not taken from deposits in caves.

Perhaps the cave was used by earlier Spanish explorers to store raw diamonds and the Comanche were just taking advantage of the stockpile to trade for other goods.

There was a large ongoing commercial concern at the time, Comancheros trading with the Indians for goods and slaves. A very interesting story indeed. I would research to see if there are any diamondiferous kimberlite or lamproite deposits in the vicinity.

Does anyone have any further information on this? I will follow this story to see if there are any updates.
