Gold Prospecting in Northern Nicaragua
by: Brent Hawley

Gene Estes, Long shot, but I'm trying to find a man from Oregon named Dale that was prospecting on the Rio Coco about 3 years ago. Interested in buying his boat that is deteriorating in the sun and that was nearly stolen by locals. Hate to see it go to waste. Do you happen to know Dale or have a last name for him? Thanks.

I have lived in Nicaragua for 5 1/2 years and have had a 6 inch dredge for 5 of it. The northern part of Nicaragua is where the best placer mining is.

I don't know how it is if you are none resident but getting permits are easy if you are. Don't mess with lawyers and or Managua. Go to the Alcaldia in the area you want to work and get his written permission. It is not that hard. You are going to have to get his permission regardless and not doing so can cause you big problems.

The rivers in Nicaragua are free but the land is not. Somebody owns it. Find out who it is and cut a deal with them. It stops any problems in this area and also gives you security for your equipment.

Hire a Nica to help you and this also helps get you in with the crowd. Don't lie to them and do what you say you are going to do and don't try to be slick. This is a small area and word gets out if you try to screw them and work comes to a halt.
