Residency and Rentals in Ecuador

Hi Stan, When visiting, do I need more than my plain, old Passport? (Like a Visa I have to obtain in advance.)
When visiting, how long can I stay without getting a residency Visa?
How long does a residency Visa last, and how much does one cost, using your recommended experts?
About how much do the following cost to rent?
A car?
A 4x4?
A hotel room?
A monthly apartment?
A translator?
Also, how stable is the government?
Thanks, Russ
Stan's response: You can show up at the airport in Ecuador with only a passport. You will be issued a tourist visa for 90 days. With a small effort, that visa can be renewed for an additional 90 days.
There are a number of different types of residency visas available. You should consult with an immigration lawyer or someone who know better than I to decide which one is best for your situation. It is relatively quite easy to do.
Cost to rent (approximately):
car - $50 per day
4 X 4 - $80 per day
hotel - $8 - $100 per night
furnished apt. - $150 - $450 per month
translator - $10 - $20 per day
excellent meals - $1.50 - $5
The governments have never been stable in Ecuador for hundreds of years. We're still here though and loving life in Ecuador every single day. There is a certain unique freedom here that you can not find in a first world country anywhere on the planet.
